Activity: Investigate the Code of Hammurabi

Explore the Code of Hammurabi and discover its philosophy of punishment.

  1. Visit the Yale Law School Avalon Project and read the “Introduction” by Charles F. Horne. Briefly explain the importance of the Code of Hammurabi in legal history.

  2. Click on The Code of Hammurabi translated by L.W. King. Scroll through the document until you reach the section on Code of Laws. Create an organizer chart like the one below to record the following information:

    • Summarize the following 16 offences listed in the Code of Laws.
    • Identify the corresponding punishment for each offence.
